Basketry and mat weaving like pottery are among earliest man’s creation which need no chemistry or tools to produce them. Chitwan National Park is our natural world heritage site which is filled with Napier grass along with other 14 variety of grasses.

Shyam Badan Shrestha

Born in 1948, Shyam Badan Shrestha used to produce knotted items and saw dust dolls as her handicraft business. Since 1995, she started venturing into natural fiber and taught women living in buffer zone of Chitwan forest in mat weaving from napier grass locally known as gulgulla. Today these women are capable of weaving different patterns of garden accessories including table runners, table mat to sofa pillows.
